Reflection
Create a reflection about the movie Outsourced using the PowerPoint I give you. Show that you really understand the above cultural concepts.

1. As soon as Todd arrives, he experiences the discomfort of being disoriented in a
strange new place. What happens at the airport?  He struggled trying to walk through the huge crowed at the airport, which was an abnormal scene for him. Then he got annoyed by all the taxi drivers around him, who were fighting over him

2. When a friendly traveler helps him get on the train, what does he tell him to do? He advised him to jump into the train

3. When he gets on the train, he cannot find an empty seat. How is this problem
solved for him? How might this be a cultural solution? The young kid offered him his seat and then sat in his lap, because of the high population in india people are used to such a solution such as sharing seats, standing and squeezing in the train cabins.

4. As any exchange student, he has a lot of experiences trying new food. His first
encounter is with an iced drink. What happens? He got stomach ache, and got sick because of the polluted water used in the iced drink.

5. First encounters with a culture can be shocking – Todd sees crowded streets with
cows, noise, and a man urinating in the street. But how does his host describe the
city? “Bombay is terrible, but here it’s very clean”

6. Even though the host Puro speaks English, Todd uses American slang a lot
without thinking. So as not to insult Puro, what does he say the meaning of
Schmuck is?  That means like a nice guy

7. Todd wants to check in to a hotel. But Puro insists he comes to a boarding house.
What is the reason he gives Todd? That he will feel lonely if he stays by himself in the hotel.

8. As soon as they meet, Aunti Ji starts asking very intimate questions that
Americans who have just met would never ask. What kind of things does she ask?
What does your father do, are you married, what’s your salary, do you have a girlfriend? Why did you break up?
9. During his first conversation with Aunti Ji he makes two big mistakes. What are
they? He ate with his left hand which considered not clean in india and he placed the same hand he ate with back in the food

10. The Golden Rule says do unto others as you would have them do unto you. That
means his Indian hosts and friends are trying to make him comfortable the way
they would be comfortable. How does this apply when the servant is preparing
tea for Todd? She poured the tea for him and even put sugar just the way they do.

Exersice # 6

                                                              The Culture Iceberg

4- Explain the "iceberg" theory of culture. Why is it important for cross-cultural understanding?

In a comparison between iceberg and culture there can be found a lot of similarities between them referring to the idea of what is visible and what is invisible. It can be seen that just a small portion is invisible under the water, and that exactly describes people's thought about culture. People often think of a culture from the observable. External manifestation such as food, music and arts but in reality culture is more deeply than that, it's about how core values and attitudes are interpreted in daily life situation. In addition, it's a necessary to know more about cultural core values because it's  help you to be more understandable and not to judge a culture by it's visible side.

* Give five example of surface culture:-

1- Food.
2- Dances.
3- Arts.
4- Music.
5- Greeting rituals.

* Give ten examples of underlying ( below the surface ) culture :-

1- Attitudes.
2- core values.
3- Way they act.
4- Words they use.
5- laws they enact.
6- Communicating ways.
7- The media.
8- Economies.
9- Educational systems.
10- History.
11- Religion
12- Family

My cultural Diversity ( Reflection )

My cultural diversity:

This is our video for culture diversity :

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2J1TYFVkOw4&feature=youtu.be

We went to the heritage village in Dubai to know about old culture in UAE before 40 years and more, also we made some videos with other expats to know about their culture in their country.

first we went to see old houses and how they built it. Old houses were made by palm trees that were tensioned by rope. Also in the past they didn't have air conditioner but to solve this problem they made a small hole in the walls to let the air enters inside the house in summer.
They also had pots to save water inside because they didn't have freezer before.

After that we went to see old boats, they were in two types, one of them was used to transport from a place to another while the second type was used to make a living, for example: they used this boats to go fishing to ate and sold fish, they also used for diving to get pearls and sale it.

Finally we made a conversation with expats and ask them about what they know about our culture and what is the difference between us and them.
There are many difference between our culture and their culture.
for example: they built their houses by stones but we built it by palm trees. Also we are known for our hospitality but they only receive people they know.

In this trip i feel like i was living with my ancestors and i learned about our culture 40 years ago. In addition i learned about other culture in other countries 40 years ago.

Culture and Personality in Anthropology

Read the section about Culture and Personality in Anthropology. Answer these questions about that section:-

1.       Define “Anthropology” in your own words: Is the study of human behavior from the point view of cultural diversity.

2.       What do you understand by “socialization of children” Give an example: Teaching them how to eat, respect other people, how to talk, and how to deal with other people.

3.       Read this sentence again and give examples of childrearing in different societies and cultures: “socialization creates personality patterns. It helps shape people’s emotions, thoughts, behaviors, cultural values and norms to fit into and function as productive members in the surrounding human society. The study of culture and personality demonstrates that different socialization practices such as childrearing in different societies (cultures) result in different personality types.”

In other societies: (children should be seen and not heard) and (spare the rod and spoil the children) and that means if you don’t punish him, he will be spoilt or badly behaved. In our society:  they let them depend in themselves and give them the chance to give their opinions, and if they were bad sometimes parents use beating but they don’t beat them hard.

4.       Read this sentence again and say to what extent you agree: “all humans are the same when born, but childrearing in different societies causes deviations in behavior and personalities from each other.”

Yes I agree with it because when the children come to life they are new  and we teach them good or bad behaviors. Also every baby in the world is same but when we teach them then there will be a difference between them, someone become good and someone become bad.

5.       Reflect on the reading above. Can you see a link between your culture and your personality? Think about that in relation to your own culture first, and then think about personality and culture in a different society. Reflect. Give examples.

Our culture reflect on our personality and shape it, because, our society is an Islamic society and its conservative society, our ladies must cover their faces, and they cannot deal a lot with strange men. Also they can't hand shaking with them. In addition Islamic society teaches us to be generous and don’t lie to each other. Also it prevents bad habits such as drinking alcohol, and we all try to do good things like our profit Mohamed tell us to do. And that’s reflecting on our behaviors and.
